Mumbai rains: Schools, colleges shut amid IMD's orange alert, govt advises wfh for private offices

Mumbai woke up to heavy rains and a cloudy morning on Tuesday, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) declaring an orange alert for heavy rain and gusty winds in the metropolis.

The orange alert issued by the IMD indicates that people should be prepared for extremely bad weather that can cause significant disruptions, transport delays, and power outages, an official said. It is at the third level in a four-stage colour system, placed above yellow and below red.

At the same time, traffic on the Mumbai-bound carriageway of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway's 'Missing Link' bypass section resumed on Monday night after remaining shut for more than 18 hours following a landslide triggered by overnight heavy rains.

Schools and colleges shut

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued an order shutting down all government, private and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai on Tuesday amid heavy rainfall across the city.

In a statement issued late Monday night, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced a holiday for all educational institutions on Tuesday to ensure students' safety in light of the weather forecast.

Schools and colleges across Mumbai had also remained closed on Monday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert warning of heavy rainfall.

The Maharashtra government has advised private companies to allow employees to work from home wherever feasible as heavy rainfall continues to disrupt normal life across Mumbai and neighbouring areas. The advisory comes amid a red alert and widespread disruption to road and rail services caused by incessant rain over the past two days.

In a statement, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) urged private offices to facilitate remote working arrangements wherever possible in view of the prevailing weather conditions. It also appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel as authorities assess the impact of the heavy rainfall across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
