India has introduced tunnel hood technology as part of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project, marking another milestone in the country’s high-speed rail programme.
According to a Times of India report, this is the first time India has deployed this technology for a train project. The technology is being installed in the mountain tunnel sections of the corridor, which passes through Maharashtra and Gujarat.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail route includes seven mountain tunnels in Maharashtra and one in Gujarat. During the construction of this project, engineers are adopting advanced solutions used in some of the world's most developed high-speed rail networks to ensure passenger comfort, safety and environmental sustainability.
Tunnel hoods are among these innovations and are expected to play an important role in improving the travel experience once bullet train operations begin.
What are tunnel hoods and why are they needed?
When a high-speed train enters a tunnel, it pushes a large volume of air ahead of it. This creates strong pressure waves that travel through the tunnel. If these pressure waves are not properly controlled, they can produce a loud booming sound when the train exits the tunnel.
Tunnel hoods are specially designed structures built at tunnel entrances. They act as a transition zone between the open atmosphere and the enclosed tunnel environment. By allowing air to move more gradually, they reduce sudden pressure changes and improve the overall aerodynamic performance of the railway system.
How the technology works
A key feature of the tunnel hoods is the inclusion of pressure-relief vents or openings. These vents allow a portion of the compressed air generated by an approaching train to escape gradually into the atmosphere.
This process reduces the intensity of pressure waves inside the tunnel, minimises tunnel boom and helps maintain smoother airflow. As a result, passengers experience a more comfortable journey, while nearby communities face less noise disturbance.
Bringing global best practices to India
Tunnel hoods are commonly used in countries operating bullet trains at speeds exceeding 300 kmph. Their adoption in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project reflects India’s effort to incorporate international best practices in high-speed rail infrastructure.
According to experts, the technology will play a key role in reducing noise, improve safety and support efficient train operations at very high speeds.
Beyond passenger comfort, it also contributes to better environmental performance, making India’s first bullet train corridor more aligned with global standards for modern high-speed rail systems.
