PM Modi hails BJP’s Delhi win, vows to table CAG report in first assembly session

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and assured Delhi residents that the Comptroller and Auditor General's (CAG) report would be presented in the first assembly session under the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) government.

"These AAP-da (disaster) people tried to put up various conspiracies every day to win the assembly election. But I guarantee that now the CAG report will be presented in the first assembly session, whoever has looted will have to return it," PM Modi said, addressing thousands of party supporters at their headquarters.

The BJP secured a decisive victory in the assembly elections, winning 48 of the 70 seats. In contrast, AAP suffered a significant setback, managing only 22 seats— a steep decline from its 2020 performance when it won 62 seats.

AAP secured a vote share of 43.57 per cent, down from 53.57 per cent in the 2020 polls. In the 2015 Assembly elections, it had secured 54.5 per cent of the votes.

In 2020 and 2015, the party won a massive mandate by securing 67 and 62 seats respectively. However, this time it was restricted to only 22 seats.

The BJP, which is returning to power, secured a vote share of 45.56 per cent and won 48 seats. The saffron party's vote share rose from 38.51 per cent in 2020 and 32.3 per cent in the 2015 elections.

The Congress, which was in power in Delhi for 15 years from 1998 to 2013, did not win any seat and secured a vote share of 6.34 per cent. The only consolation for the grand old party was the fact that it saw an improvement of 2.1 per cent in vote share over The party polled 6.34 per cent of the valid votes as against 4.3 per cent in the 2020 assembly polls, denting its INDIA bloc partner AAP across segments.

Notably, the CAG report revealed a significant revenue loss of Rs 2,026 crore due to irregularities in the Delhi government's excise policy. The report's findings stated that there were deviations from the objectives of the policy, a lack of transparency in pricing, and violations in issuing licenses that were not penalised.

Of the losses amounting to Rs 2,026 crore to the state exchequer, Rs 890 crore resulted from the government's failure to re-tender the surrendered licenses before the policy period concluded, according to the report. Additionally, the exemptions granted to the zonal licenses led to a loss of Rs 941 crore.

The Prime Minister also thanked people of Delhi for their support to BJP in assembly polls and said they are feeling relief on making the national capital "AAP-da free".

Addressing a gathering at the party headquarters after party's resounding victory in assembly polls, PM Modi said BJP will return love of the people of Delhi in form of progress and development.

He took jibes at the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, referring to it as "AAPda (tragedy)"."I thank the people of Delhi. Delhi has given us love wholeheartedly and I once again assure the people that we will return you double the love in the form of development," he said.
