Manipal rape: Hospital confirms rape, campus offers Rs 3 lakh for info

The Manipal state hospital has confirmed that a 22-year-old MBBS student of  Manipal University on 20 June was raped.The medical confirmation of rape comes even as the university decided to offer a cash reward of Rs 3 lakh for anyone who could provide information about the suspects.The university cash prize is in addition to an announcement by the Udupi police declaring a cash reward of Rs 2 lakh for information.[caption id="attachment_907663" align="alignright" width="380"]Protests against rape in Delhi last year: Reuters Protests against rape in Delhi last year: Reuters[/caption]The police has also released CCTV footage of a rickshaw going out of the university campus at 11.36 pm on the night of 20 June and of one entering the campus at 2.51 am. However, the details of of the rickshaw are not visible. The police has also released a sketch of one of the three men who allegedly gangraped the student, reported CNN-IBN.The student from Kerala was allegedly kidnapped in the university campus late on Thursday night as she was returning to her apartment from the university library and gangraped.The victim, who has suffered a fracture in her leg and injuries on her hands and neck, is still recovering.She hailed an autorickshaw in which the group of men was present and was allegedly abducted and then taken out of the University campus premises, a report in the Hindu stated.The student was then dropped back near the residence where she was staying and the group of men fled. Her roommates reportedly informed the university administration and she was rushed for treatment to a local hospital.Though the police have statements from the victim herself, and also have questioned 30 people, including seven who resemble the sketch, they have failed to make any arrests."We are progressing quite satisfactorily in isolating number of autos. We have not come to a state where we can say for sure which auto but we have been isolating number of autos," CNN-IBN quoted Pratap Reddy, IGP (Western Range) as saying.Manipal has witnessed protests following the incident with the protesters demanding immediate arrest of the persons responsible for the crime and enforcement of stringent laws to curb rapes and crimes against women.The protesters also submitted a memorandum addressed to the Home Minister and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
