India successfully test-fires Agni-1 ballistic missile off Odisha coast

India on Friday successfully test-fired short-range ballistic missile ‘Agni-1’ from the integrated test range at Odisha’s Chandipur, the defence ministry said.

The launch validated all operational and technical parameters, it said.

“The test was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command,” the ministry said.

The missile was inducted into service in 2004, and is currently operated by the Strategic Forces Command. It provides India with a rapid-response, high-precision strike capability against regional targets.

The Agni series of missiles was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.
