I have no idea how my name is in report, says Tyagi

Ex-Indian Air Force Chief SP Tyagi, who was said to have been bribed by Finmeccanica to swing the controversial AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal in favour of the company, has denied his and his kin's involvement in the deal.In an interview to Headlines Today Tyagi said, "I have no idea how my name has appeared in this report. I am shocked and in disbelief. I have had nothing to do with this. How could I have been bribed?"[caption id="attachment_623437" align="alignleft" width="380"] Image courtesy: Ibnlive[/caption]Italian prosecutors said in their warrant on Tuesday that two managers at AgustaWestland, a unit of defense group Finmeccanica , paid go-betweens to help it win the 2010 contract to supply 12 helicopters to India.Part of these payments ended up with the three brothers, Juli, Docsa and Sandeep Tyagi, who are SP Tyagi's cousins."Tyagi Brothers are my cousins. They have told me they had nothing to do with the VVIP chopper scam," Tyagi told Headlines Today.In a growing corruption scandal, police arrested on Tuesday AgustaWestland's former chief executive Giuseppe Orsi, who now heads Finmeccanica. Orsi denies any wrongdoing over the 556-million-euro deal.An IBN-Live report quoted Tyagi as saying "To the best of my knowledge no requirements were tweaked. I have checked with my colleagues also, there were no requirements tweaked up to three months before I left. After that what happened, I will not know. There is a process. There are records. We can make no changes in any deal. The IAF can only recommend changes and only ministry can make changes. I made no changes in any deals."The case, which is still in its preliminary investigation phase, has rocked Italy before parliamentary elections on February 24-25, and also India, the world's largest weapons importer.Prosecutors in the northern town of Busto Arsizio, near AgustaWestland's headquarters, said Orsi hired US-born Guido Ralph Haschke, who was then a consultant for the Finmeccanica group, to lead dealings in India to secure the contract.Haschke and his partner Carlo Gerosa, prosecutors said, had close ties with the Tyagi brothers.With inputs from Reuters
