General Dhiraj Seth takes charge as India's new Army chief

General Dhiraj Seth assumed charge as the new Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) on Tuesday, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired after more than four decades of distinguished service in the Indian Army.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, General Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. Before taking over as the Army Chief, he served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff.

His appointment comes amid continued security challenges along India's borders and a rapidly changing global strategic environment.

Distinguished military career

General Seth brings nearly four decades of operational, strategic and administrative experience to the Army's top post. Over the years, he has served in a wide range of command, staff and planning appointments, contributing significantly to the force's combat readiness and long-term transformation.

One of the defining features of his career is the rare distinction of commanding two major operational Army commands along the western front. After being promoted to the rank of Army Commander, he headed the Jaipur-based South Western Command before taking charge of the Pune-based Southern Command.

Before becoming the Vice Chief of the Army Staff in April this year, General Seth led the Southern Command, where he ensured a high level of operational preparedness during Operation Sindoor.

A day earlier, President Droupadi Murmu presented Uttam Yudh Seva Medal to General Seth.

Experience across diverse operational roles

Throughout his military career, General Seth has commanded formations at every level in diverse operational environments, ranging from deserts to counter-insurgency theatres.

His command assignments include leading an Armoured Regiment in the desert sector, an Armoured Brigade in the western theatre and a Counter-Insurgency Force in Jammu and Kashmir.

As a Lieutenant General, he commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the Army's premier strike formations. He later served as the General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, where he oversaw several important national and international military engagements as well as ceremonial responsibilities.

Strong academic and professional credentials

General Seth is also recognised for his academic achievements in professional military education. He has consistently secured top positions in various military courses during his career.

He is a graduate of the Higher Command Course and the National Defence College. He also attended the prestigious Command and Staff Course in Paris, further strengthening his expertise in strategic and contemporary military affairs.
