FSSAI issues nine notices to Swiggy Instamart over alleged food safety violations

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued nine notices to quick-commerce platform Swiggy Instamart after receiving multiple consumer complaints alleging violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

According to the food regulator, the complaints raised concerns over the alleged supply of expired, spoiled, rotten, contaminated and otherwise unsafe food products through the platform. Consumers also claimed that repeated complaints did not receive a satisfactory response from the company.

In a statement posted on X, FSSAI directed Swiggy Instamart to submit a detailed explanation and compliance report, warning that "failing which appropriate legal action will be initiated".

Among the products mentioned in the complaints, 'Healthify 100% Whey Protein 1 kg' and 'Noice Homestyle Madras Mixture with Peanuts' were allegedly delivered after their expiry dates.

Consumers also alleged that 'Akshayakalpa Organic Egg' was supplied in an expired and rotten condition, emitting a foul odour and showing signs of contamination, making it unfit for human consumption. The complaint further claimed that no corrective action was taken despite the matter being escalated.

Another complaint alleged that 'Kakke da Paratha' was delivered in a spoilt condition, with a foul smell that rendered it unfit for consumption.

An infant food formulation was also reportedly found in a highly deteriorated and unsafe condition, with signs of contamination and improper storage and handling. According to the complaint, the same product was supplied again even after the defective item had been returned.

Apart from product quality issues, the notices highlighted concerns over allegedly incorrect, invalid or non-existent FSSAI licence numbers. The regulator also flagged instances where food business entities were listed under names that did not match those reflected in their FSSAI registrations.
