All you need to know about Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag: New Army Chief

• An alumnus of the Sainik School in Chittorgarh, Lt Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag was commissioned into the 4/5 GR (Frontier Force) in June 1974.• His first significant assignment was as a company commander during Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka.[caption id="attachment_1521885" align="alignleft" width="380"] Lt Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag. Image courtesy Indian Army[/caption] • Prior to commanding the the 53 Infantry Brigade in Jammu and Kashmir where Lt Gen Suhag gathered rich counter-insurgency experience, the officer also raised and commanded the 33 RR in Nagaland. Later he also commanded 8 Mountain Division in Jammu and Kashmir from October 2007 to December 2008. • After his stint as Major General in Jammu and Kashmir, Lt Gen Suhag was appointed as the GOC-in-C of Rangapahar-based 3 Corps in Nagaland. The Corps is involved in counter insurgency operations in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and southern Assam. • The officer became mired in controversy when he was heading the 3 Corps for a failed intelligence operation in Jorhat, Assam. In 2012, he was put under Discipline and Vigilance ban by then Army Chief Gen VK Singh that delayed his promotion as Army Commander to head the Eastern Army Command in Kolkata. • The DV ban was lifted after Gen Bikram Singh took over as Army Chief and he was promoted to Eastern Army commander.• Lt Gen Suhag took over as the Vice Chief of the Indian Army in January this year. • The officer does not use his 'Suhag' surname for Army records.
