2G trial: Why the CBI wants Unitech MD Sanjay Chandra in jail

After allegations that Unitech MD Sanjay Chandra was in touch with a public prosecutor to affect the trial in the 2G scam case, the CBI today told the Supreme Court that it had verified the conversation was authentic and has sought that his bail be cancelled to prevent him from tampering with evidence.The CBI has reportedly told the apex court that the Central Forensic Science Laboratory had confirmed that the recorded conversation between Chandra and proseucutor AK Singh was genuine.Chandra and Singh had refused to provide voice samples for investigations but witnesses had reportedly identified the voices, reported India Today. [caption id="attachment_924763" align="alignleft" width="380"] Chandra is among the main accused in the 2G scam. Reuters[/caption]“It is clear from the conduct of the accused that there has been a clear and direct attempt to sabotage the conduct of this trial and to impact its outcome,” the CBI’s application stated, reported the Hindustan Times. The agency has said that allowing Chandra to remain out on bail could affect the trial and has asked that he be kept in jail for the duration of the trial.The conversation between the lawyer and Chandra had taken place in August 2012 when a key witness was being examined in the case.In the tape, the prosecutor is heard telling Chandra that key witness of the CBI and former DoT officer, AK Srivastava, who had cleared all the 2G licences applications, would compromise his testimony.CBI sources had earlier said they believed the tape had been recorded by someone who was present in a room along with Singh and Chandra when they were allegedly discussing the strategy in the case.AK Singh was not the main prosecutor in the 2G case, and was dismissed.The probe agency also constituted a special team of officials to make an assessment of the damage, if any, to the prosecution in the spectrum allocation case.
