12 years on the trot: PM Modi enters record books with 4,399 uninterrupted days in office; NDA plans celebrations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially created history, becoming India’s longest-serving continuously elected Prime Minister. Crossing the mega milestone of 4,399 consecutive days in office, PM Modi surpasses the record of 4,398 uninterrupted days held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, following the country's first democratic general elections.

To mark 12 years of the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP)-led government and celebrate the Prime Minister's personal milestone, leaders of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will meet later today.

The celebratory event will bring together 72 top political figures, including NDA Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, Union Ministers, and key alliance stakeholders.

Reflecting on the milestone, BJP President Nitin Nabin stated, “These 12 years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership have been underlined by Vishwas, Vikas, and Jan Kalyan (trust, development, and public welfare). This era will be recorded in history as one of Bharat's economic empowerment and the rise of its honor on the global stage.”

Decoding the historical numbers

While Jawaharlal Nehru accumulated a total of 16 years as Prime Minister starting from Independence in 1947, his first five years were spent heading an interim, pre-election government. His unbroken tenure as a directly elected leader began following the conclusion of the first general elections on May 13, 1952, lasting until his demise on May 27, 1964.

Similarly, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served for a cumulative total of over 14 years, but her tenure was famously fractured by the 1977 general elections. Modi's unbroken 12-year stretch—spanning landslide majorities in 2014 and 2019, followed by the seamless continuation of governance under the NDA coalition in 2024—makes his continuous democratic run entirely unique in the modern era.

A legacy of 'speed and scale'

Senior political leaders and cabinet ministers took to media channels to highlight the structural shifts that have defined the post-2014 landscape.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the work accomplished during this 12-year tenure "will be etched in golden letters," charting India's definitive course toward becoming a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).

Cabinet colleague Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasised the macroeconomic transformation, pointing out that India's domestic production rate has maintained an average growth of 7 per cent over the past 12 years.

Ministers highlighted several major infrastructure and governance achievements during Prime Minister Modi's tenure, including the expansion of India's national highway network to more than 1.5 lakh kilometres and the growth of operational airports from 74 to 160. They also pointed to the transformation of welfare delivery through digital public infrastructure, the JAM (Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile) trinity, and the global expansion of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

The milestone has reverberated well beyond India's borders, drawing praise from international heads of state. 

In official statements, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake termed the achievement a powerful "testament to democratic trust," while Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape sent a personal video message calling Modi a global "role model of leadership," specifically praising the eradication of extreme poverty for over 200 million citizens.

Responding to the wave of felicitations, Prime Minister Modi dedicated the 12-year milestone to the country's citizens. "With the blessings of 1.4 billion fellow citizens and the spirit of nation first, we have spared no effort in empowering our youth, women, and our farmer brothers and sisters," the Prime Minister stated, affirming the collective commitment to India's rising global identity.
