Persistent bloating could signal serious health conditions, warn experts
Doctors say recurring bloating accompanied by symptoms such as fatigue, appetite loss, constipation or pelvic pain may require medical evaluation to rule out digestive, hormonal or cancer-related conditions.

Feeling bloated after a heavy meal or during periods of stress is common and usually harmless. However, health experts warn that when bloating becomes frequent, lasts for weeks or appears alongside symptoms such as abdominal pain, fatigue or unexplained weight loss, it may signal an underlying medical condition that requires attention.
Doctors say persistent stomach swelling is increasingly being linked to chronic digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, liver disease and, in some cases, even certain cancers. While many people continue to dismiss bloating as simple gas or indigestion, specialists caution against relying only on home remedies or over-the-counter medicines without understanding the root cause.
Dr Sharad Malhotra, Senior Consultant and Director of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Therapeutic Endoscopy at Aakash Healthcare, said chronic bloating should never be ignored, especially when accompanied by additional warning signs.
“You should not ignore bloating especially when it continues for weeks. Many patients take antacids or gas-relief medicines without understanding the root cause,” Dr Malhotra said.
According to him, bloating occurs when the gastrointestinal tract fills with air or gas. Occasional bloating is often linked to eating habits or certain foods, but persistent symptoms may indicate more serious conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease, food intolerances, liver problems or hormonal disorders.
“Chronic bloating can sometimes indicate digestive disorders, liver problems, hormonal conditions or even early signs of certain cancers,” he added.
Doctors say digestive issues such as lactose intolerance, gluten sensitivity, constipation and gut infections are among the most common causes of recurring bloating. These conditions can interfere with digestion and lead to excessive gas formation, discomfort and abdominal swelling.
Lifestyle factors also play a major role. Stress, anxiety, irregular eating patterns, processed foods, carbonated drinks and inadequate water intake can all worsen digestive symptoms and trigger long-term bloating in some individuals.
Experts particularly advise women not to overlook persistent stomach swelling. In some cases, ovarian cancer may initially present with subtle symptoms such as bloating, pelvic discomfort and feeling unusually full after small meals.
Because these warning signs can appear mild in the early stages, many patients delay medical evaluation, allowing serious conditions to progress unnoticed.
Dr Malhotra said symptoms such as sudden weight loss, appetite changes, constipation, pelvic pain, fatigue, fever, vomiting or blood in the stool alongside bloating should be treated as red flags requiring immediate medical attention.
“If a patient experiences symptoms such as sudden weight loss, appetite changes, constipation, pelvic pain or fatigue, proper medical evaluation becomes extremely important. Timely diagnosis can help identify the problem early and improve treatment outcomes significantly,” he said.
Doctors also stress the importance of preventive lifestyle changes to improve gut health and reduce digestive discomfort. Eating slowly, limiting processed foods and sugary beverages, staying physically active and drinking enough water may help reduce bloating episodes.
Including fibre-rich foods, probiotics, fruits and vegetables in daily diets can further support healthy digestion.
Mental health and digestive health are also closely connected, experts say. Chronic stress and anxiety can affect gut function and aggravate bloating symptoms in many individuals. Practices such as yoga, meditation and maintaining healthy sleep routines may therefore help improve digestive wellbeing.
While herbal teas, warm water and dietary adjustments may offer temporary relief, experts caution against depending entirely on home remedies if symptoms persist for long periods.
Health specialists say listening to the body’s warning signs is essential, as seemingly minor digestive symptoms can sometimes point to more serious underlying diseases. Early medical consultation and timely investigations, they stress, remain key to protecting long-term health.
