The old saying "trust your gut" may be rooted in more science than folklore. Researchers are increasingly uncovering how the digestive system and the brain are closely linked through a communication network known as the gut-brain axis, a two-way pathway that allows the brain and gut to continuously exchange signals.

While scientists are still exploring the full extent of this relationship, growing evidence suggests that maintaining a healthy gut may not only improve digestion but also support emotional well-being, cognitive function and healthy ageing.

Experts say this communication occurs through multiple pathways, including the vagus nerve, the body's longest cranial nerve as well as immune signals, hormones and trillions of microorganisms collectively known as the gut microbiome. These microbes help digest food, regulate immunity and produce several neuroactive compounds that influence brain function.

Dr Praveen Gupta, Chairman of the Marengo Asia International Institute of Neuro and Spine (MAIINS), Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram said the gut microbiome plays a far greater role than digestion alone.

"The gut is home to trillions of microorganisms, referred to as the gut microbiome. These microbes are important not just for digestion, but for producing chemicals and neurotransmitters that affect mood, stress responses and cognitive function," he said.

According to Dr Gupta, an imbalance in the gut microbiome has been associated with symptoms such as anxiety, depression, brain fog and increased stress. He added that researchers are also studying possible links between gut health and neurological disorders including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis.

"It is increasingly being recognised that gut health is a significant aspect of brain health," he said.

Dr Lovelina, Additional Director, Neurology, Fortis Hospital (Vasant Kunj) explained that the gut microbiome produces several neuroactive compounds, including serotonin, dopamine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which help regulate mood, sleep, learning, memory and emotional responses.

"The gut and brain function as one interconnected system rather than two separate organs. Protecting gut health is increasingly recognised as an important step in supporting cognitive function, emotional well-being and healthy ageing," she said.

She noted that while growing research suggests gut microbiome imbalance may be associated with conditions such as anxiety and depression, scientists are still investigating these complex relationships. Inflammation and immune responses originating in the gut are believed to influence brain health and disease progression.

Lifestyle changes can help support a healthy gut

The digestive system itself also depends on a balanced microbiome. Dr Nishant Nagpal, Director, Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital (Vasant Kunj) said everyday experiences such as "butterflies in the stomach" before an important event or loss of appetite during stressful periods illustrate the close connection between the gut and the brain.

"A large proportion of the body's serotonin is produced in the gut," he said, adding that a healthy and diverse gut microbiome contributes to efficient digestion, nutrient absorption, immunity and overall wellness.

However, poor eating habits, prolonged stress, inadequate sleep, unnecessary antibiotic use and certain illnesses can disrupt this balance, increasing the risk of digestive conditions such as bloating, constipation, acidity, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Research also suggests these changes may influence mental health, contributing to anxiety, low mood and difficulty concentrating.

The experts agree that maintaining gut health does not necessarily require drastic lifestyle changes. A fibre-rich diet containing fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and fermented foods such as curd can nourish beneficial gut bacteria. Regular physical activity, adequate hydration, quality sleep and stress management also help maintain a healthy microbiome.

Dr Gupta additionally recommended limiting ultra-processed foods, while Dr Lovelina said supporting gut health may benefit the nervous system by helping maintain optimal brain function.

The specialists also advised people not to ignore persistent digestive symptoms such as unexplained abdominal pain, recurring acidity or changes in bowel habits. Likewise, neurological symptoms including persistent headaches, unexplained dizziness, memory problems, mood changes or poor concentration—particularly when accompanied by digestive complaints—should be medically evaluated to identify any underlying conditions.

Although research into the gut-brain axis is still evolving, experts say one message is becoming increasingly clear: caring for digestive health may be an important investment in both physical and mental well-being.
