Can a vaccine treat cancer? Inside the science of Vaxira, the shot that teaches the immune system to hunt lung tumours
Developed by Cuban and Argentine scientists, Vaxira uses molecular mimicry to train the immune system to recognise and attack tumour cells, offering a targeted alternative to traditional cancer therapies

In a bi-national partnership with Argentine scientists, Cuban researchers have developed Vaxira (chemically known as racotumomab), a highly specialised therapeutic vaccine that trains the human immune system to track down and eliminate advanced lung cancer cells.
The innovative treatment has formally secured regulatory approval in both Cuba and Argentina, specifically indicated for patients battling advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have completed their initial rounds of chemotherapy or radiation.
Rather than working as a preventative injection, Vaxira acts as an active immunotherapy.
The cellular Trojan Horse
The scientific mastery behind Vaxira relies on a concept known as "molecular mimicry." The vaccine is an anti-idiotypic monoclonal antibody designed to act like a cellular mirror. It mimics a very specific sugar molecule called NeuGcGM3 ganglioside, a compound densely concentrated on the surface of solid tumour cells but largely absent in healthy human tissue.
Vaxira works through a highly targeted mechanism. First, the vaccine introduces an engineered antibody that closely mimics the chemical signature of the NeuGcGM3 tumour marker. As a result, the patient's immune system identifies this signature as a foreign threat and mounts a strong, targeted response against it. Once activated, these immune cells circulate throughout the body, seeking out and attacking cells that display the NeuGcGM3 marker. In doing so, they specifically target cancer cells while largely sparing surrounding healthy tissues from damage.
While traditional chemotherapy operates like a blunt instrument—killing healthy and malignant cells alike—Vaxira acts as a targeted biological blueprint, forcing the patient's own body to hold the line against cancer progression.
Data compiled from multinational phase III clinical evaluations and extensive real-world usage has shown a lot of efficacy. When administered as a "switch maintenance" therapy, given immediately after a patient’s tumours have stabilised from first-line chemotherapy, Vaxira significantly extended median overall survival rates.
Real-world observational studies tracked long-term survival success, with some cohorts demonstrating a five-year survival rate of 20 per cent in advanced-stage diagnoses that historically carried grim prognoses.
Beyond pure survival metrics, the treatment radically alters the patient experience. Because it ignores healthy tissue, Vaxira bypasses the brutal, systemic side effects that define modern oncology.
The commercial rollout of Vaxira is being facilitated by the international public-private consortium ReComBio, bridging Havana’s Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM) with Argentina's prominent Elea Laboratories.
