Nasheed's supporters clash with police in Maldives

Male:  Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed's supporters clashed with security forces in Male, during a rally to protest his ouster.Protesters threw pavement cement blocks, glass marble pebbles and chilly dissolved in water over security forces on Thursday.[caption id="attachment_376617" align="alignleft" width="380"] Protesters clashed with maldivian security forces on Friday to protest former President Mohammed Nasheed's (in pic) ouster[/caption]After a confrontation that lasted over two hours, the protest was dismantled and roads were evacuated at around 1 am local time, Maldives police said.More than 100 supporters have been arrested,  the Maldivian Democratic Party claimed.MDP members had vowed that they would  continue protesting until Waheed's government was removed from power and a fresh Presidential election was declared.But Waheed remained defiant."MDP should understand that government cannot be toppled from the streets," President Mohamed Waheed said after opening the Dialysis Unit at a hospital in HulhuMale's island on Friday.On Wednesday night too at the Huraa island, Waheed had warned that the patience of the government must not be tested and that his government was not going to be scared.MDP Spokesperson Imthiyaz 'Inthi' Fahmy vowed to continue with the protest and added that a protest would also be organized in Colombo this Sunday.Fahmy also said MDP was going to withdraw Nasheed's statement regarding former President Maumoon, alleging that he was behind the coup.Nasheed had resigned on 7 February this year in what he termed was a "coup" and was replaced by his then Vice President Mohamed Waheed.Meanwhile, the National Commission of Inquiry set up by the Maldivian government to probe the events leading to the regime change is going on.PTI
