Tamim Iqbal secures full-time BCB President role after urging stronger India-Bangladesh cricketing ties

Former cricketer Tamim Iqbal has been elected as the new President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Sunday. The ex-BAN captain had served for two months as head of the ad-hoc committee and was elected unopposed following the elections in Dhaka.

The elections to form a new body were held in April, and Tamim will serve in a full-time role for a four-year term.

The BCB had been in turmoil after the Bangladesh government dissolved the previously elected body under Aminul Islam after a probe committee's report exposed that he and other board members were involved in corruption. 

Tamim to address loopholes after election as BCB President

Tamim stressed constitutional reforms in Bangladesh cricket following his appointment as full-time BCB president. He acknowledged the presence of loopholes and emphasised that any necessary reforms to improve national cricket would be discussed at the upcoming AGM.

"There are a lot of things, loopholes, and if we all agree together (about constitutional reform), we will discuss them in the next AGM. This is not like a board of 12 or 13 people where one person says something, and it is done. We have to deal with 1972 councillors. So they also have to agree. But for the betterment of Bangladesh cricket, if any constitutional changes are needed, we will definitely discuss and consider them," Tamim said, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

The former cricketer intends to "act with full honesty" and be "as transparent as possible," and does not want any of the board members to "do anything that makes us controversial."

Will the India-Bangladesh ties improve?

Tamim has been a key figure who publicly advocated for better cricketing ties between India and Bangladesh after the two countries' ties strained following the men's T20 World Cup 2026 controversy.

Some Bangladeshi critics labelled the former cricketer an 'Indian agent' for his stance, to which he clarified that his position was to promote diplomacy between the two cricketing nations to ensure they do not miss future opportunities.

Tamim has reportedly been working to mend relations with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to reinstate bilateral cricketing ties, and the progress seems to be going well.

However, given that Team India has a packed schedule for the rest of the calendar year, whether the deferred IND-BAN series, which was supposed to take place in the late August-early September window, will take place is yet to be seen.
