Shubman Gill reflects on strategy and execution after India's historic Test win over Afghanistan: 'Keep testing them in...'

Team India Test captain Shubman Gill broke down the strategy and execution after their historic victory over Afghanistan in the one-off Test match. He expressed delight at the team's performance while also stressing adaptability and producing big numbers on the scoreboard.

The Indian cricket team secured a commanding victory over Afghanistan during the one-off Test on Monday in New Chandigarh (Mullanpur). The Men in Blue won by an innings and 300 runs, their biggest-ever win in red-ball cricket.

Gill reflects on the game plan

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, skipper Gill expressed satisfaction with how things went, especially taking quick wickets in tough, hot conditions.

"Ticked all the boxes, very happy with that. It was very hot. We decided that if we bowl them out by lunch or around the first drinks break in the second innings, we will ask them to bat again," Gill said.

When asked how spinners need to set up the batsman in such conditions, Gill said the key is to keep testing them in various areas and execute dismissals smartly. He added that the batting group is under pressure but is trying to gain valuable experience by learning what works in different conditions.

"Keep testing them in different areas. It's pretty simple: When you are batting first, post a big total. Take upwards of 20 wickets. The batting group is under more pressure; we are trying to get experience, what game can work for us in different conditions," he added.

India seal monumental victory over Afghanistan

Spin attack played a monumental role, with debutant Manav Suthar anchoring India's landmark victory over Afghanistan. The left-arm spinner executed a lethal 6/33 spell, leading to the Afghans being bowled out for 152 in the first innings.

After India enforced a follow-on, AFG picked up a decent start before the hosts' spin trap effectively laid them down. The visitors were bundled out for 112 in 35.5 overs on the third day of action, with Washington Sundar (4/36) and Kuldeep Yadav (3/30) coming in clutch with their innings.
