Pakistan cricket Director Aqib Javed humbled in press conference: 'How much time you need to...'

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Director of High-Performance Aqib Javed was grilled by a reporter during a press conference where he was clearly asked the timeline of when he will fix the cricket in the country.

PCB recently announced a change in their central contract structure which will now be based on formats rather than tiers. The board revealed the details of the new structure at a press conference where a journalist almost left Javed speechless.

Javed, a former Pakistan pacer, was asked that why fitness could not become a priority in his long tenure at Pakistan Super League franchise Lahore Qalandars and then at the national team.

"Mr Aqib, I have a question for you. You have been with Lahore Qalandars for about 7-8 years and you know all the players. Which player has how much capacity. In the document released recently, there are three formulas which are just basic cricket and in these fitness comes first. You are with the team for two, two and a half years. Was this fitness criteria not being adopted for all this time?

"Then in your first policy, you ended Grade A and started with Grade B. Now you have introduced another formula. How much time exactly do you need to fix Pakistan cricket? If this also does not work, then will you bring another new policy or devise another new strategy?

"Mr Chairman, you have given so much time and so much free hand to fix cricket. You should get the credit for it. If cricket is still not fixed, will you ask for accountability from those in charge that despite so much free hand and so much time cricket is still not getting better," the reporter asked in his long question.

Aqib seemed lost for words for a moment before he began his reply, "So you are asking in how much time will this be done? There are three types of cricket. There is Test, ODI and then T20 and to fix it all we cannot set a timeline. We are not making a building. So, it is hard to give you a timeline that after six months, Pakistan will never lose. So, this is not possible.

"Cricket is the most difficult sport to improve in," he concluded.
