Holder's controversial catch during GT vs RCB under fire as ex‑cricketer calls for 'second look' on Patidar's dismissal

Former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop has expressed his take on Gujarat Titans all-rounder Jason Holder's catch that dismissed Royal Challengers Bengaluru skipper Rajat Patidar in a controversial fashion. Bishop wasn't pleased with the situation that ensued, and was wondering whether the fielder's fingers were below the ball during the catch.

A controversy erupted during the GT vs RCB IPL 2026 match on Thursday in Ahmedabad when Holder sprinted to complete a stunning catch, dismissing Patidar. But the RCB camp wasn't pleased with the decision, and Virat Kohli had an animated chat with the fourth umpire on whether the catch was clean.

The action replay showed that Holder picked up the catch cleanly and slid across the surface, but the ball may have touched the grass when the fielder was getting up.  

Bishop wants second look on controversial dismissal

Bishop shared that while Holder caught the ball, his hands slid to the ground, raising doubts on whether the ball had touched the grass and questioning whether the fielder had complete control of his ball and his body. He noted that the back of Holder's hand faced upwards, suggesting that the ball was close to the grass.

The former cricketer further argued that the catch requires a second look as proper control wasn't established unless a player stops sliding and stands up.

"My debate on it would be: Jason Holder, first, he caught the ball, no problems with that. And then with the sliding of the hand initially, that deserved a second look. And then you talk about control of the ball, but also control of the body. So when you're looking to get yourself up having slid along the ground, are they determining that his fingers was under the ball?

"Because the back of the hand was to the sky, which means the ball was facing the grass. And so there was to me doubt there about ball and ground, because you're not in control of your body until you stop sliding and you stand up if you're going to do that," Ian Bishop said on ESPNCricinfo's Time Out show.

Bishop concluded by saying that there is sufficient evidence for it to be not out.

RCB suffers huge defeat against GT

Royal Challengers Bengaluru endured a tough challenge facing the Gujarat Titans' bowling attack in Ahmedabad on Thursday and were bundled out for 155 runs in 19.2 overs. Devdutt Padikkal scored 40, while Kohli picked up 28 runs as the rest of the batting unit failed to make a significant impact.

GT started decently, with skipper Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler anchoring the chase. Impact sub Rahul Tewatia delivered an unbeaten 27 runs, while Rashid Khan scored the winning runs to wrap up the chase in 15.6 overs and secured a four-wicket win.

GT will be back in action in IPL 2026 when they face off against PBKS on Sunday, May 3, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
