India vs Afghanistan: What happened when the two teams last played a Test match?

India and Afghanistan are set to play a one-off Test match in New Chandigarh in what will only be the second encounter between the two teams in the traditional format. The fixture does not carry any World Test Championship points, but it is still significant, especially from the point of view of Afghanistan.

Afghanistan rarely get to play Tests and to play against one of the stronger sides in world cricket, will help their young players get a taste of quality red-ball cricket. For India too, this match comes as a chance to give their young players a sighter of the international stage.

India vs Afghanistan, 2018

Afghanistan was granted the Test status in 2017 and the very next year, they played their first Test match. India invited Afghanistan for a one-off Test in 2018 with the timing being similar to this year's match.

The clash took place in Bengaluru in June 2018. Afghanistan were led by Asghar Stanikzai while India rested regular captain Virat Kohli with his deputy Ajinkya Rahane taking over.

Batting first, India posted a commanding 474 in their first innings. Openers Murali Vijay (105) and Shikhar Dhawan (107) both scored centuries while Hardik Pandya (71) played a crucial knock down the order. KL Rahul (54), the only Indian still part of the team from that match, also scored a fifty.

Afghanistan's Rashid Khan had to bowl 34.5 overs to take his two wickets while Yamin Ahmadzai was the most successful bowler with three scalps to his name.

In reply, the visitors could not put up a fight and were bowled out twice within a day, ending the game in just two days. R Ashwin took four wickets in the first innings and Ravindra Jadeja took the same number of wickets in the second. With scores of only 106 and 103, Afghanistan batters had a forgettable debut.

The match became only the fourth instance in Test history where a team was dismissed twice in a single day. It ended in just 263.2 overs, making it one of the shortest completed Test matches in modern cricket.

While the result of the match was forgettable for Afghanistan, the game itself was a victory for the war-torn nation which has seen a rapid rise in the cricket world in recent decades. After the match, Indian captain Rahane invited the entire Afghanistan squad to get clicked with the Indian team while collecting the awards.
