Shreyas Iyer handed India's T20 baton: How the senior batter was elected captain despite a three-year absence

Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as India's new T20 captain by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), succeeding T20 World Cup-winning skipper Suryakumar Yadav.

With the new T20 cycle building towards the 2028 T20 World Cup, the national selection panel made a decisive move to reinforce the team's leadership and maintain dominance in the game's shortest format.

As India undergoes a major transition in T20 cricket, many have questioned how Iyer earned captaincy despite not playing international T20s for India since December 2023.

Why was Iyer chosen as T20 captain?

While Suryakumar's leadership delivered titles such as the 2025 Asia Cup and the 2026 T20 World Cup, his form took a major beating. Before assuming captaincy duties, he averaged 43.40 at a strike rate of 168.17, smashing three centuries and 17 fifties.

But after he was made captain, SKY’s average dropped to 28.65 with a strike rate of 154.96. He managed to score just one hundred and eight half-centuries.

Surya also holds the record for maintaining the highest win percentage in T20Is (80.76 per cent) as captain, but his declining form opened doors for a fresh tactical voice. Iyer's appointment as India's new T20 captain reflects the selectors' focus on strategic development and long-term stability.

The primary reason behind Iyer's elevation is his established IPL leadership record and consistent domestic performances. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title and led Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals to finals in separate campaigns, becoming the only skipper in IPL history to lead three different franchises in the final.

Iyer clawed his way back to the top after his 2024 setback, when he lost his BCCI central contract for skipping domestic matches for Mumbai. He eventually regained the board’s trust after focusing on fitness and consistency during state-level outings and IPL and was reinstated as a centrally-contracted player in 2025.

The batter's ability to anchor the middle order while accelerating when required, combined with his tactical maturity, made him the standout choice as captain for India’s next T20 cycle.

His appointment also signals that SKY was a transitional figure, as the BCCI now seeks continuity in the role.

How has Iyer performed in IPL 2026?

In IPL 2026, Iyer scored 498 runs in 14 innings at an average and  strike rate of 55.33 and 168.81, respectively, demonstrating sharpness in his batting. He also struck his maiden IPL hundred against the Lucknow Super Giants this season.

As a captain, the middle-order batter has consistently displayed temperament and poise. In the IPL, he has captained over 100 matches and maintains a win percentage of 58.3 per cent.

While PBKS missed out on a playoff spot, Iyer delivered a sound campaign, making him one of the most impactful players of the season.
