Why Ben Stokes could lose England captaincy after nightclub controversy

England Test captain Ben Stokes is facing one of the biggest challenges of his career after becoming the subject of an ECB investigation following a nightclub incident in London.

Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning after England's victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's. An incident reportedly took place involving the two cricketers and a player from Saracens Rugby Club, leading to an investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

In a statement, the ECB confirmed that both players are being investigated for breaching team protocols. "The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first men's Test against New Zealand," the board said.

"Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place. We are currently seeking further information and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course," the statement read.

The matter has also been referred to the Cricket Regulator, an independent disciplinary body that has the authority to impose suspensions and unlimited fines. A decision is expected soon, with England set to name their squad for the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval.

Why Stokes might be forced to step down?

According to reports, the incident was not started by Stokes or Atkinson. However, the fact that both players were out beyond the team's midnight curfew has put them in trouble. The curfew was introduced after England's off-field issues during the 2025-26 Ashes series in Australia and following Harry Brook's nightclub incident in New Zealand last year.

The investigation has also raised questions about Stokes' future as captain. Reports suggest that Stokes is considering his position and that vice-captain Harry Brook could take charge of the team if the skipper is suspended or asked to step away temporarily.

The timing of the incident is embarrassing for England because head coach Brendon McCullum and team management have spent the last few months trying to improve discipline and change the team's culture after criticism over excessive drinking and off-field behaviour.

This is not the first time Stokes has found himself at the centre of controversy. In 2017, he was involved in an incident outside a nightclub in Bristol that led to his suspension. Although he was later cleared, he missed the entire 2017-18 Ashes series because of the case.
