Bangladesh’s political shake-up to end India cricket rift? Shakib Al Hasan drops big hint on BCB-BCCI reset
Shakib Al Hasan has claimed that Bangladesh’s recent political change and the overhaul at the BCB could help repair strained ties with India and the BCCI after months of controversy and diplomatic fallout.
Bangladesh star cricketer Shakib Al Hasan feels that the change of government in his country and the shakeup at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will lead to better cricketing relations with India and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
BCB's relationship with BCCI had hit a new low under former board chief Aminul Islam Bulbul, who was sacked by the new Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government earlier this month.
Under Aminul, BCCB had actively sided with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Even when PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi refused to hand over the Asia Cup trophy to India, Bangladesh stood by his side. They also boycotted the T20 World Cup 2026 matches in India, leading to their expulsion from the tournament.

However, things are changing under the new prime minister, Tarique Rahman. Former Bangladesh batter Tamim Iqbal, who shares a good bond with India, has been appointed as the caretaker BCB head and the board has also reached out to BCCI to mend the relationship.
Bangladesh's greatest ever cricketer, Shakib Al Hasan, feels that under the new government, the cricketing relationship with India will improve.
"I think things will start to get better," Shakib Al Hasan told news agency ANI. "There was an election that happened, so a new government came in. I think they'll take the right decision in terms of cricket.
Shakib Al Hasan added that BCB will look to have a cordial relationship with all stakeholders when the next governing committee is elected.
"Also, our cricket board election is supposed to happen sometime soon. Once that happens, I think it will settle down, and they'll have good communication with, not only India, but with all other boards, and they'll have fruitful discussions, and they'll take things forward," he added on Wednesday.
The new government may also pave the way for Shakib Al Hasan to return to the national side, as he has not played for Bangladesh since 2024.
