Iyer termed 'stand-out' captaincy candidate as Agarkar explains decision to drop Suryakumar: 'His own form...'

Shreyas Iyer was a 'stand-out candidate' for captaincy of the Indian T20I team due to his performances as the skipper in the Indian Premier League, chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained during the press conference after the announcement of the squad for England, Ireland tours and the Asian Games.

“With regards to Shreyas, seen what he’s done last few years, leading different franchises. Led a team to title, his own performances been good. Was close to being part of the WC squad, in my opinion was a “stand-out candidate."," Agarkar said.

Agarkar also explained why Suryakumar Yadav lost captaincy and his place in the team. "With regards to SKY, it was a tough one. Partly his own form and also looking at next two-year cycle, we thought this was the best way forward. Shreyas is well-deserving,” said Agarkar.

'Sooryavanshi is a game-changer'

Another highlight of the squad selection was the inclusion of the 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi who had a breathtaking IPL 2026. Agarkar highlighted the same while explaining the Bihar batter's selection.

“We have seen what he can do. Even in the (IPL) playoffs we saw he almost single handedly carried his team. For a young kid to be batting in a high pressure environment, he can be a game changer. It’s commendable,” said the former India all-rounder.

Tilak Varma was appointed the deputy to Iyer and Agarkar said that the left-hander can learn more about the job of leading a side while being in the role.

Talking about Hardik Pandya, who has not been included in any of the squads, Agarkar said that the all-rounder's fitness is being looked after with an eye on the World Cup of next year.

“The main objective is to see if Hardik can play ODI cricket and be fit as there is also an ODI World Cup ahead. It also gives (Nitish) Reddy a look in,” said Agarkar.
