Today (May 13), former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's son and the Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav’s stepbrother, Prateek Yadav, died in Lucknow. Prateek was 38.

Around 6 am in the morning, he was brought to the Civil Hospital, where the doctor pronounced him dead. The exact cause of Prateek's death has not been disclosed yet. A post-mortem examination is underway, and more details are awaited.

A team led by Dr Mousami Singh at KGMU is conducting the postmortem. A chest X-ray was conducted before the postmortem started. Senior health officials, including the CMO, also arrived at the postmortem house, where a heavy police presence has been deployed, according to reports.

News18 reported, citing sources, that Akhilesh Yadav’s stepbrother was admitted to a private hospital in Lucknow on April 30. He was in a critical condition. Prateek's health improved after three days, and he left the hospital without formal discharge.

Who was Prateek Yadav?

Prateek had completed his Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Leeds University, England.

He was a fitness enthusiast. Prateek owned a gym in Lucknow called “The Fitness Planet." On social media, he always posted about his gym routine and fitness.

Prateek also operated an animal welfare organisation called “Jeev Ashray”, which worked on the rescue, treatment and care of stray dogs. He was always vocal about animal welfare.

In September 2012, Prateek was featured as the “International Transformation of the Month” on a globally recognised bodybuilding website. According to media reports, he also ran an NGO for homeless people.

The 38-year-old largely remained out of politics. On January 19, he announced his separation from his wife, Aparna Yadav, who is an active member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, they reconciled within a few days, according to reports.

Prateek had married Aparna in December 2011. Their relationship started in 2001, when they first met at a birthday party.

Several prominent personalities, including Amitabh Bachchan, attended their wedding in Saifai. The pair went on to become parents to two children.

"Extremely Heartbreaking"

Leaders are expressing grief over the sudden demise of Mulayam Yadav's younger son. The SP supremo called it "Extremely heartbreaking."

Expressing grief, Yadav wrote on X, “The demise of Shri Pratik Yadav ji is extremely heartbreaking! May God grant peace to the departed soul. Humble tribute!"

Condolences also poured in from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

“The sudden demise of Shri Prateek Yadav Ji, son of former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, ‘Padma Vibhushan’, the late Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji, and husband of Smt. Aparna Yadav Ji, Vice-Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission, is extremely heartbreaking. Humble tribute. My condolences are with the bereaved family," he wrote on X.

Adding, "I pray to Lord Shri Ram that the departed soul attains eternal peace and the grieving family is granted the strength to bear this immense sorrow. Om Shanti!" Yogi added.
