In Graphics | The 23 dog breeds that Centre has asked states to ban in India

Amidst a flurry of troubling incidents involving certain dog breeds, the Centre has stepped in with a bold move: a nationwide ban on the import, breeding, and sale of around 23 "ferocious" dog breeds. It means, no more Pit bulls, Rottweilers, Terriers, Wolf Dogs, or Mastiffs roaming the streets or lounging in living rooms.

This prohibition extends to crossbreed and mixed breeds as well.

Prompted by a report from an expert committee and animal welfare organisations, as mandated by a ruling from the Delhi High Court, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying has urged each state to refrain from issuing licences or permits for the sale or breeding of these canines. The decision, underlined by a surge in dog attack incidents across the nation, underscores the paramount importance of public safety.
