While Pakistan holds its breath to see which party takes power, the shadow of Imran Khan continues to loom over the polls.Though the former prime minister has been sent to prison in a slew of cases, Independent candidates backed by his Tehreek-e-Insaaf party continue to chalk up wins.But Imran is hardly the first prime minister sent to prison.Indeed, Pakistan has struggled with democracy since its inception.It has has been ruled by the military for nearly half its existence.Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy, the fifth prime minister of Pakistan, was arrested in January 1962.Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who served as the ninth prime minister, was sentenced to death and hanged on 4 April, 1979.Benazir Bhutto, the country’s only woman prime minister was repeatedly arrested.Nawaz Sharif was arrested in 1999 after General Pervez Musharraf took over and later on exiled for 10 years.No prime minister in the history of Pakistan has served their full five year term till today.Let's take a closer look:
