In a video titled Evolution Of Bollywood Music that has recently gone viral we see a group of boys who call themselves Penn Masala sing a mash-up of Bollywood's hit songs from different eras.They kick-start the 40s and 50s with the magical Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki by Mohammad Rafi and mashes it up with a medley of iconic numbers like Mera Joota Hai Japani, Ena Mina Dika, Ajeeb Dasta Hai Yeh and Aaja Aaja Main Hu Pyaar Tera.A screen grab from Youtube.Following which they go from black and white to technicolor and come back with a costume change and in different lighting to depict the 60s and 70s.They begin 70s with the intoxicating Roop Tera Mastana. The memorable Bobby number, Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein Band Ho and Yeh Dosti from Sholay follows right after that.They don't forget the angry young man of 70s and gives an apt tribute to Amitabh Bachchan with Don's Khaike Paan Banaras Wala and Sharabi's Intehan Ho Gayi Intezaar ki.However, while Amitabh Bachchan's songs feature prominently in the Evolution of Bollywood music video, strangely missing from the medley are songs picturised on Bollywood divas like Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi.It is a little difficult to imagine 80s and90s without the Dhak Dhak song or Ek Do Teen. One cannot possibly sum up Bollywood music and not mention Kate Nahi katte, Khuda Gawah or Chandni. Anyways, Penn Masala steps into the 80s and 90s with Pehla Nasha and suddenly fast forwards to Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge's Mehendi Laga Ke Rakna. Songs from Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Dil Se, Pardes and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai also feature reminding us of the bygone days when Shah Rukh Khan was the last word in romance.The decade of 2000 begin with familiar numbers like Koi Kahe from Dil Chahata Hai and Na Tum Jano Na Hum from Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. From Kajrare, Mauja Mauja to Jai Ho and Munni Badnaam, Penn Masala sum up 2000- to the present date really well.Formed by the students of University of Pennsylvania in 1996, Penn Masala is the world’s first Hindi capella group.Watch the video here:
