Watch: Anushka Sharma gets real about Bollywood's double standards and sexism

The latest to join the brigade of actors voicing out their opinion is Anushka Sharma. Her interview with Anupama Chopra has been doing quite a few rounds on the internet, and for good reasons, as she makes some valid points.Anushka Sharma said in her interview that women are only expected to be "good looking" and "be interesting enough for a guy to be interested in her" and that usually if there are two women working in a film together, it is for the purposes of making the guy feel important. She asserted that these practices are reflective of our society. "Men can work as long as they want to, no matter the age, but women are only okay till they are young as in desirable," she says.[caption id="attachment_2457314" align="alignleft" width="380"] Anushka Sharma. IBNLive[/caption]She vehemently said that there is discrimination at every level, whether it is about getting money as a producer or getting a better room in an outdoor schedule. "A male actor at the same level as I am would get paid more," she reiterates.For all her opinions, Anushka said that she is often referred to as an 'activist' and said, "If you are asking for something you deserve then you are a b****."In the past, Radhika Apte in an interview with Rajeev Masand also spoke about the regressive and sexist Telugu Film Industry (TFI). Ileana D'Cruz in an interview with The Times of India aired similar views. The paper quotes her saying, "In the Telugu industry, it is customary for a woman to stand up in the presence of a director or a star. On my first film, this assistant director came to me hurriedly and said, 'Stand up. Stand up!' I said, 'Why?' And he said, 'The director is coming.'"All this just makes us think aloud, why do actors who espouse all the tenets of egalitarianism, also known as feminism, shy away from calling themselves feminists? In this list of feminists who don't like being called feminists are scions in creative fields like Meryl Streep who called herself a “humanist”. Parineeti Chopra, brand ambassador for the 'bedi padhao, beti bachao' campaign denied that she is a feminist. Bjork justified her statements by saying that calling herself a feminist would "isolate" her. Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift have also kept away from this "unglamourous" word.And so, here we are, cheering on this new wave of actors who are not afraid to speak their mind.
