The Wolverine trailer out: X-Man in Japan

Hugh Jackman entered our collective consciousness as an actor when he stole the show in X-Men, which brought the mutants to film for the first time. Since then he's played Wolverine, by far one of the most popular characters of the comic series, in three other movies (if you don't count X-Men: First Class where he made a guest appearance) and Jackman's star has been on the rise, while the character's seems to be on the wane on celluloid. Jackman's back as the adamantium-fuelled superhero who can't be destroyed and is more than willing to rip apart anything that irks him in the latest spinoff from the X-Men series, succintly titled The Wolverine.

The trailer kicks off where X-Men: The Last Stand ended. Wolverine's still mourning the loss of Jean Grey, and is spending his time in the mountains in the company of powerful spirits (the alcoholic kind). A bar brawl later he's goes to Japan, where he meets someone he once saved from a nuclear blast.

Survivor from nuclear blast wants to thank Wolverine (who says he's no longer that) and offers him mortality. Wolverine looks anguished enough and seems to accept it. Wolverine gets shot and a bunch of Japanese mobsters beat him to semi-consciousness and he wonders why he's not healing "like before".

And what would a film in Japan be without the Samurai and ninjas thrown in. So in this one we have one samurai who manages to cut Wolverine and a whole horde of ninjas who take him on. And even a very impressive looking fight sequence on a bullet train. No sumo wrestlers thankfully.

Helmed by James Mangold (director of films like Walk the Line and Girl,Interrupted), The Wolverine seems to be keeping with the present theme that our superheroes can be mortal. Unfortunately, it comes after last year's awesome smash hit The Avengers, so the bar has already been set high for this one.
