The Boys creator Eric Kripke reveals scrapped Gen V Season 3 plans after cancellation

Eric Kripke has opened up about the future of The Boys universe following the show’s finale, revealing that the now-cancelled Gen V Season 3 would have focused heavily on Marie Moreau stepping into a central heroic role.

Speaking to Variety, Kripke discussed the finale deaths, possible spin-offs and how the franchise could continue through future stories, including the upcoming prequel series Vought Rising.

Although The Boys has officially concluded, Kripke confirmed that the wider franchise still has multiple directions it could explore. During the interview, he pointed to unresolved storylines introduced in the finale, including the return of Stan Edgar as Vought’s interim CEO and the future of Hughie and Annie’s child.

Kripke said the creative team remains interested in continuing several character arcs, especially after setting up major changes within the superhero world.

“This may be the end of The Boys, but the universe is continuing,” he suggested while discussing the future of the franchise with Variety.

Marie Moreau was set to become the franchise’s next central hero

Kripke also revealed that Gen V Season 3 was originally intended to shift the emotional focus of the franchise from Starlight to Marie Moreau. According to him, the finale deliberately hinted that “the torch was being passed from Annie to Marie for the good supe you’re following.”

He explained that the original plan involved placing the Gen V characters at the centre of a chaotic new superhero landscape where Vought no longer protected or controlled supes. Kripke described the scenario as “all these loose nukes,” referring to superheroes suddenly being left without institutional support after Stan Edgar’s changing stance toward Vought’s relationship with superheroes.

What Gen V Season 3 would have explored

Without revealing major story specifics, Kripke confirmed that these ideas were intended for Gen V Season 3 before the series was cancelled. He explained that the storyline would have worked as a metaphor for young adulthood, focusing on uncertainty, instability and identity.

“The plot challenges they would have had to deal with were almost this metaphor of being a young adult,” he said.

According to Kripke, the season would have explored themes such as navigating a collapsing system, building a future without institutional support, and confronting superheroes choosing between heroism and villainy.

He also hinted at morally grey characters emerging in the new world order, asking, “Who tries to be Jessica Jones, and who tries to be a super villain?”

Could the Gen V characters still return?

Despite the cancellation, Kripke suggested the door remains open for the Gen V cast to return in future projects connected to The Boys universe. He said the team is currently in the “very embryonic stage” of discussing new ideas and finding ways to continue some of those unfinished stories.

That means characters like Marie Moreau could potentially reappear in upcoming spin-offs if future projects move forward.

For now, the franchise’s next major expansion remains Vought Rising, which will further explore the origins of the corrupt superhero corporation.
