Subhash Ghai documentary announced: All you need to know

EPIC Studios and Mukta Arts have announced a strategic partnership for a feature-length documentary on legendary filmmaker Subhash Ghai. Directed by Raghav Khanna, the documentary aims to chronicle Ghai’s larger-than-life cinematic journey and his influence on Hindi cinema during the 1980s and 1990s.

The makers have revealed that the documentary is being designed for a global audience, with plans to premiere at a prestigious international film festival before heading to a global streaming platform.

According to the official announcement, the feature documentary will revisit India’s cultural and cinematic transformation through the lens of Subhash Ghai’s films.

Beyond tracing the filmmaker’s personal journey, the project will also focus on the technical evolution of Hindi cinema during that era. The documentary will reportedly feature interviews with cinematographers, editors and composers who worked closely within the industry, offering insight into how Ghai helped redefine scale, music and storytelling in mainstream Indian cinema.

The film will combine archival footage, behind-the-scenes material, news archives and recreations to create what the makers describe as a “premium, contemporary treatment” of a defining cinematic period.

Subhash Ghai says cinema has always been about “emotion, music and dreams”

Speaking about the documentary, Subhash Ghai said, “Cinema, for me, has always been about emotion, music, and dreams that stay with people for generations. I’m deeply touched that this journey is being revisited with such care and passion for a new audience.”

Known for directing iconic films such as Karz, Hero, Ram Lakhan, Khal Nayak and Pardes, Ghai remains one of Bollywood’s most influential filmmakers.

Aditya Pittie, Managing Director of The EPIC Company, described the collaboration as an important step for the studio.

“At EPIC Studios, we are committed to backing stories that celebrate the rich tapestry of Indian culture with a contemporary edge. This collaboration with Mukta Arts marks a monumental leap forward for us,” he said.

He further added that the project has the potential to combine cinematic history with premium storytelling for international audiences.

Meanwhile, Samar Khan, CEO of EPIC Studio (OTT & Television), said the documentary would balance “emotional nostalgia and cinematic grandeur”.

Mukta Arts to open archives for the documentary

Rahul Puri, Managing Director of Mukta Arts Limited, stated that the company would provide access to its archives and memories for the project.

“His films not only entertained audiences, but also reflected and shaped the culture, aspirations, music, and spirit of India during that era,” Puri said while speaking about Ghai’s legacy.

He added that the collaboration with EPIC Studios would help present the story of the “70mm era” to a new generation of viewers.

Director Raghav Khanna calls it “more than a biopic”

Director Raghav Khanna said the project goes beyond a traditional documentary format.

“I grew up on the cinema of Subhash Ghai, and it is an exhilarating journey to transition those vivid memories into a long-form narrative,” he said.

Calling the film “more than a biopic”, Khanna described it as “a time-machine into a generation of youth and a society in flux.”

The documentary is currently in development, with further details regarding release timelines expected to be announced later.
