Mersal actor Vijay meets Edappadi K Palaniswami ahead of film's release on 18 October
Mersal has been in the news ahead of its Diwali release because the CBFC has still not granted certification to Vijay's film over animal welfare issues.

Ilayathalapathy Vijay-starrer action blockbuster Mersal is expected to release this Diwali. Ahead of the much-anticipated release, Vijay had a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday to sort out the issues regarding his forthcoming film. This meeting came following the Central Board of Film Certification's (CBFC) claim that the film hasn’t been certified yet.The News Minute reports that Vijay had a discussion with the chief minister to make sure the film releases as per schedule after the producers reportedly urged the Vijay to intervene. However, there is no official confirmation on the same yet. There was a growing concern about Mersal’s release this Diwali as the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Council (TFPC) and theatre owners were protesting against a local body tax imposed by Chennai Corporation without any notice. But the entertainment tax has now been lowered to eight per cent from the 10 per cent. The good news is tickets rates have also been revised. Vijay has thanked the Chief Minister for this initiative.Earlier, the CBFC raised questions over the scenes that involved pigeons in Mersal and made it clear the film has to show an NOC from Animal Welfare Organisation. The situation got even worse when a petitioner filed a case against Mersal at Madras High Court to ban the film with immediate effect. This film is expected to be one of the high-profile Tamil releases in 2017. Ever since the project commenced, fans throughout the country are eagerly waiting for the film’s first day first show. The first look posters and even the teaser have already received an amazing response from the audience. Directed by Atlee, the star cast includes Nithya Menen, Samantha Akkineni, Kajal Aggarwal, SJ Suryah and Vadivelu in various important roles. Vijay will be seen in three different roles, namely a panchayat head, a magician and a doctor.Mersal is produced by Sri Thenandal Films and its music has been composed by AR Rahman.
