Governor movie throws a light on the then Reserve Bank of India Governor S.Venkitaramanan, who headed the country’s central bank during India’s economic meltdown period of 1990-92, when the country faced a massive Balance of Payment crisis. During that period India almost became bankrupt, but he was a saviour and the unsung hero of India’s economic history.
Who was S. Venkitaramanan?
S. Venkitaramanan was an IAS officer. According to reports, when India's foreign exchange reserves had almost completely depleted, Venkitaramanan led the central bank through intense stabilization efforts. He oversaw the critical decision to pledge 67 tonnes of gold to international institutions to secure emergency funding, successfully saving the country from a sovereign default.

The film focuses on the 1990–1991 severe economic crisis when India was on the verge of bankruptcy, facing a severe balance of payments crisis and dwindling foreign exchange reserves. It was this man, S. Venkitaramanan (Manoj Bajpayee) who believed that we can get funds from the IMF and when that didn’t happen he thought of another solution. Venkitaramanan is famously known for authorizing the pledging of India’s gold reserves with the Bank of England and the Union Bank of Switzerland to raise USD 405 million, avoiding a sovereign default. There was huge objection from all quarters on his decision. But he went ahead with it along with the support of the government and his colleagues.
