The team of Mahesh Babu's upcoming film with AR Murugadoss, titled Spyder, released the first look of the film on Wednesday, 12 April 2017. The project was initially simply known as Mahesh 23.

On Tuesday, the Twitter account of NVR Cinema had put out a tweet announcing that the first look of this film would be released on a day later, nearly two weeks after Mahesh Babu asked his fans to "be patient".Director AR Murugadoss retweeted this tweet with the caption, "On the way," and Babu retweeted the director's tweet. Initially, the first look was supposed to be released on 29 March, 2017 on the day of the festival of Ugadi. This film marks Mahesh Babu's debut in Tamil cinema. It will be released in two langauges — Tamil and Telugu. I t is a reboot of the 2012 film Thuppakki which starred Vijay and was also directed by Murugadoss. Mahesh Babu is rumoured to play a secret agent in this film and it is speculated that the film will deal with the issue of terrorism. In the recent past, Babu released a picture of his favourite still from the film. A song from the film, 'Ye Maayalo', was also leaked in March. Spyder (or Mahesh 23 as it was previously known) will be released on 23 June 2017. It stars Rakul Preet Singh as the female lead and SJ Suryah as the antagonist.
