Cannes 2026: Alia Bhatt questions Indian cinema's focus on male audiences, cites 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' as an example

Alia Bhatt arrived with all style and elan at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival. And she gave her take on Indian cinema and its reliance on the male gaze and male audiences.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress said, "It shouldn't matter whether a film stars a man or a woman. The story should matter." She cited 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' as an example, which recently released in cinemas. She also revealed what her Highway director Imtiaz Ali told her.

"I was celebrating my 19th birthday on the sets of the film and it was a night shoot. I recently met Imtiaz and he said that I had grown up." She also said how last year was full of chaos as she landed and went straight to the Cannes 2025.

In the IMDb’s Icons Only segment, Alia was quoted saying, “Hopefully many more movies, not just as an actor but hopefully also as a producer. More babies, lots of travel, and just a healthy, happy, simple, quiet, peaceful, full-of-nature life.”

She added, “I think for me, maybe Student of the Year because honestly, it’s the youngest, most chill film that kids could watch. And that is my first film. Although I am not really proud of my performance in that film, but it’s full of songs, and I think she would really enjoy that.”
