Delhi Metro trains staff in sign language to help impaired commuters

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro, in collaboration with the Indian Sign Language Research & Training Centre (ISLRTC), today began training its Customer Relation Assistants (CRAs) in sign language to help the hearing impaired and mute commuters.This training programme by ISLRTC, an autonomous body sponsored by Ministry of Social Justice And Empowerment, will help Delhi Metro’s frontline staff (CRAs) in understanding the language of deaf and mute travellers. In the first phase, the training will be imparted to 800 CRAs posted at Customer Care Centres of all Metro stations.[caption id="attachment_716470" align="alignleft" width="380"]

The duration of the training for each batch will be of two days comprising six hours each day. The classes will be held at the DMRC's Training Institute at Shastri Park Depot.DMRC receives around 80-85 requests every month through its Helpline No. 155370 for assistance of persons with disabilities. People with most forms of disabilities and who can avail the helpline's services, can alert the Metro staff in advance about their travel itinerary and can therefore be helped when they reach a particular station.
