Solar power helps India offset load on fossil fuels as energy demands peak with scorching sun
With temperatures soaring past 40°C and power demand hitting an all-time high, solar energy emerges as a critical daytime buffer—easing pressure on coal and signalling a structural shift in India’s energy mix.

As an unforgiving heatwave sweeps across large parts of India, pushing temperatures beyond 40°C, the country’s power system is being stress-tested earlier than usual. Yet, in a significant structural shift, solar energy is increasingly emerging as a crucial buffer, helping offset pressure on fossil fuels even as electricity demand surges to record highs.
India’s peak power demand touched an unprecedented 256.1 gigawatts (GW) in April, breaching previous records and signalling an early onset of summer stress on the grid. The spike, driven largely by cooling demand from air conditioners, fans and refrigeration, has forced utilities to ramp up generation across sources.
But unlike previous years, the surge is no longer being met by coal alone.
Solar rises as a daytime shock absorber
At the time of peak demand, solar power contributed nearly 57 GW, accounting for roughly 22 per cent of total generation, according to grid data. Around midday, when solar output is at its strongest, generation from solar plants and rooftop systems surged to nearly 81 GW, making up close to one-third of total electricity supply.
This growing solar footprint is proving critical. It is not just adding capacity, it is reducing the immediate burden on coal-fired plants, which continue to serve as the backbone of India’s baseload power.
The shift reflects deeper structural changes in India’s energy mix. Installed solar capacity has expanded dramatically over the past decade, crossing 150 GW, with rooftop and distributed solar emerging as key contributors.
Coal still dominant, but pressure eases
Despite solar’s rising role, coal remains indispensable. During peak demand, coal-fired plants generated nearly 187 GW, underscoring their central role in ensuring grid stability.
However, the presence of strong solar output during daylight hours allows coal plants to avoid operating at extreme capacity levels throughout the day. This load balancing effect is becoming increasingly important as demand patterns grow more volatile due to climate-driven temperature spikes.
Data also shows a gradual shift underway: fossil fuel generation growth has slowed, while renewable generation, especially solar and wind, has been rising sharply, with solar generation alone growing over 20 per cent year-on-year.
Early summer surge raises red flags
What is particularly striking this year is the timing. India typically records peak electricity demand in June or July. Hitting record levels in April suggests a longer and more intense summer demand cycle, increasing the risk of sustained pressure on the grid.
The government has already projected that peak demand could reach 270 GW in 2026, indicating that the current record may not hold for long.
Compounding the challenge is the looming threat of El Niño, which is expected to intensify heat conditions across Asia in the coming months. A prolonged period of high temperatures could keep electricity consumption elevated, particularly during daytime cooling hours, ironically, the same window where solar performs best.
Renewables reshape the energy equation
India’s broader energy transition is beginning to show tangible impact. The country now ranks among the top three globally in renewable energy installed capacity, having surpassed Brazil, with total non-fossil capacity exceeding 280 GW.
In fact, non-fossil sources already account for nearly 30 per cent of total electricity generation, with solar leading the growth curve. On certain days, renewables have even met more than half of India’s electricity demand, highlighting their expanding role in the grid.
This transformation is being driven by a mix of policy support, falling solar costs, expansion of rooftop installations, and growing private-sector participation.
The balancing act ahead
Yet, the challenge is far from over. India’s energy system must now manage two competing realities: Ensuring reliable supply during extreme demand spikes, and

For now, however, the message is clear: solar is no longer just a climate solution—it is becoming a grid stabiliser.
As heatwaves intensify and electricity demand continues to climb, India’s ability to scale solar and integrate it efficiently may well determine how smoothly the country navigates its energy future.
