India’s Biocon is preparing for a generational shift in leadership, with founder and chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw outlining a five-year succession roadmap that will see her niece, Claire Mazumdar, take over as chair in a phased transition.

Speaking to Reuters, Mazumdar-Shaw said the handover would be gradual, with Claire expected to move step-by-step from a director role to vice-chair, and eventually chair. “I am not hanging up my boots anytime soon, but I want Claire to succeed me in a very phased manner,” she said.

Claire currently serves as the founding CEO of Bicara Therapeutics, a cancer-focused biotech company that was incubated with early backing from Mazumdar-Shaw. Her experience spans business development and corporate strategy roles at Rheos Medicines, as well as company-building work at Third Rock Ventures.

The move signals a carefully planned transition at one of India’s most prominent biotech firms, ensuring leadership continuity while maintaining strategic direction. The succession plan was first reported by Fortune India.
