Yamaha recalls YZF R1 and YZF R1M

Following the recall of the Yamaha R1M to fix an issue with the rear electronic Ohlins suspension, Yamaha has issued yet another recall. This time though, all bikes including the R1 and R1M are being recalled. The issue is a faulty gearbox. The company says that due to a lack in component strength, there is high chance of the first and second gears seizing under aggressive track use. There seems to have been a few cases of this happening already reported, according to Yamaha. They have also admitted that due to the same component quality, there is a chance of the third and fourth gears warping under high stress.

Yamaha has already started getting in touch with all customers who have bought the new R1s. The customers will have to bring their bikes in, upon which Yamaha will do a free gearbox replacement for them.

The only issue is that replacement of the gearbox will not be a minor job. The bike will have to be disassembled and the engine completely opened up to gain access to the gearbox. Owners can expect their bikes to be out of action for a few days at least. Meanwhile, if you are one of the first few owners of the new Yamaha R1 or R1M, we suggest you get in touch with Yamaha and figure out how get your motorcycle fixed as well. Nobody likes a siezed gearbox, after all.
