US: 5 killed as aircraft crashes in Tennessee

Local authorities in Nashville, Tennessee, said that a tiny private jet crashed close to a roadway on Monday, killing five persons.

In a social media post, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department stated that "five people on board the airplane perished in the crash".

It also uploaded a photo of the single-engine plane's smashed wreckage.

"A single-engine airplane has crashed off the eastbound lanes of I-40 just past the Charlotte Pk exit. Several persons on board are deceased. Work continues to determine from where the plane originated," the police statement read.

"5 persons on board the airplane perished in the crash. The FAA is on scene. The NTSB will arrive later today," the statement added.

There was a "heavy fire" when the Nashville Fire Department's rescuers arrived, the department posted on social media platform X.

US media cited Nashville police spokesperson Don Aaron as saying that the aircraft reported an engine and power failure at approximately 7:40 p.m. (0140 GMT Tuesday).

It went down a few kilometers from Nashville's John C. Tune Airport, even though it was cleared for an emergency landing there.

He said that the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will look into the collision.
