Shooting at Berlin hospital: Patient kills doctor, commits suicide

Berlin: A patient of Berlin's Benjamin Franklin hospital on Tuesday injured a doctor and shot himself dead, and the doctor later succumbed to his wounds, Berlin police said Tuesday.The doctor killed in the shooting is a senior oral surgeon who underwent emergency surgery before being declared dead.Though German media reported there were counter-terrorism units and other special police forces at the scene, the police confirmed that there was no evidence of an Islamist motive in the crime.[caption id="attachment_2917086" align="alignleft" width="380"] A police officer secures the entry to Berlin's Benjamin Franklin hospital. DPA [/caption]Witnesses reported that the entrances and exits of the hospital had been sealed off, that there were 20 police and rescue worker vehicles at the scene, and that employees had been told to lock themselves in their rooms.Police gave a tentative all-clear at 2.30 pm (1230 GMT), about 90 minutes after the shooting took place on the hospital building's fourth floor."The situation at the Benjamin Franklin campus is under control – there is no danger at this time," the police tweeted."We have no evidence of more injured people or more suspects," the police added.Benjamin Franklin hospital is in the German capital's south-west and is part of the Charite university hospital, one of Europe's largest teaching hospitals.Germany has been left shaken after four violent attacks occurred over the course of one week, two of which were terrorist acts claimed by the Islamic State group.
