At least 16 people remain trapped after a landslide hit Tanchang County in China's Gansu province on Tuesday, with rescue operations underway at the site, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Authorities said 33 people were initially buried by the landslide, with 17 having been successfully rescued so far.

State-run Xinhua reported that local authorities are continuing rescue efforts to reach those still trapped. The cause of the landslide has not yet been determined.
