Tiger Pataudi

Born on 5 January 1941, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi was one of Indian cricket's finest skippers. A right-hand batsman and a right-arm medium pacer, Pataudi played in 46 Tests for India between 1961-1975.[caption id="attachment_90069" align="alignleft" width="380" caption="Getty Images"][/caption]Unfortunately, at the start of his career, a car accident permanently damaged vision in his right eye. He was just 20 then.In March 1962, Pataudi was made the captain of Indian cricket team. He had a batting average of 34. Pataudi captained India in 40 matches and won nine. He was dropped from captaincy in 1970, and as a player in 1975.Fondly known as Tiger, Pataudi studied at Welham Boys' School in Dehradun, Lockers Park Prep School in Hertfordshire, Winchester College, and Balliol College, Oxford.He was the ninth and last Nawab of Pataudi until 1971, when India abolished royal entitlements through the 26th Amendment to the Constitution of India.Pataudi was admitted to a prominent hospital in New Delhi following lung infection and had been shifted to the ICU on 21 September 2011 after doctors found him to be critically ill. He passed away in the hospital a day later.He is survived by wife Sharmila and three children — Saif Ali Khan, Soha Ali Khan and Saba Ali Khan.
