SlutWalk

[/caption]The first SlutWalk was held in Toronto in April 2011 as a reaction to comments made by a Toronto Police Constable, Michael Sanguinetti. In January, he told a personal security class at York University that "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised." He later apologised, but it was too late. What started as a protest in one city, spread over 60 cities as a worldwide celebration of identity that hits back at voices pushing the onus of security on women.One of the goals of a SlutWalk is to reclaim the word ‘slut’, just like the LBGT movement does the word ‘queer'. The organisers make a case for the freedom to identify as sluts, which they reason is empowering. Their Facebook DIY page says: "When we began Slutwalk, it was in our city as a response to a specific dynamic in Toronto and we had a very specific hope in mind: to demand better from protective services and institutions in our city of Toronto; we wanted to loudly and fiercely fight victim-blaming and slut-shaming mentalities and ideas that persistently circulate around sexual assault in our city and our country."The Slutwalk held in New Delhi's  on 1 August 2011 was the first in Asia. The next one in the country, to be held in Mumbai, is scheduled for 24 July 2011.
