West Bengal was named 'Paschimbanga' yesterday. While the netizens went berserk saying the entire exercise was pointless, the newspapers weren't left behind in criticising Mamata Di's move pointing out that the name-change was pointless.A drafting committee comprising leaders of the ruling part and the opposition in West Bengal unanimously decide on the name.Historians and intellectuals say that the government and the opposition in West Banagl showed complete lack of imagination in choosing this name for the state as it had no historical or cultural relevance. For the last few days, The Times of India was campaigning for the name 'Bengal'. Mamata government however chose to ignore that campaign. The other options for the name change were — Bangabhumi, Bangadesh, Banga, Gaur Banga or even Bangla. Paschim Banga was not one of the popular favourites as all it did was to translate West Bengal into Bengali. The state government had earlier said that a name change was required as currently the letter W put the state in a disadvantageous position as alphabetically it came almost at the end in the order.
