Gulzar

Gulzar, bollywood's legendary lyricist, is celebrating his birthday today. Born on this day in 1936, the poet and director has penned some of the most beautiful lyrics of Indian cinema.His primarily writes in a blend of Hindi and Urdu.It is said that every year Gulzar takes off to some undisclosed destination to celebrate his birthday with his family, away from the glare of media and fans.[caption id="attachment_64094" align="alignleft" width="380" caption="Gulzar is celebrating his birthday today. AFP"][/caption]Gulzar was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2004 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002. In addition he has won several National Awards for films and Filmfare awards. He was awarded the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song "Jai Ho" from the film Slumdog Millionaire. In 2010 he also won the Grammy Award for the same song.Gulzar has worked with several generations of music directors such as RD Burman, SD Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Hemant Kumar, Madan Mohan, AR Rehman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Vishal Bhardwaj.Starting his career with SD Burman for the movie Bandini in 1963, he penned award winning songs like 'Mere Apne' from the film Anand, 'Tere Bina Zindagi' from Aandhi to songs in films such as Dil Se, Maachis, Omkara, Kaminey and Raavan.Gular directed the televion serial Mirza Ghalib aired on Doordarshan in 1988. He has written dialogues for several kids' programmes such as Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland, Guchche and Potli Baba Ki with Vishal Bharadwaj.
