YouTube rolls out AI-powered podcast recommendations and adaptive ‘Auto Speed’ playback for premium users
YouTube has introduced new AI-powered podcast features for Premium users, including smart recommendations, adaptive playback speed, and an “On the Go” listening mode

YouTube on Thursday announced that it is introducing a host of new podcast-focused features for Premium users, including an AI-powered recommendation tool, an “Auto Speed” setting, and a new “On the Go” listening mode.
The update highlights YouTube’s efforts to compete more aggressively with other platforms for podcast audiences, especially as streaming giant Netflix continues investing in video podcasts. The company also appears to be targeting users who primarily consume podcasts through audio-first apps such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
The already available Google “Ask Music” feature lets Premium users generate personalised radio stations and playlists. Now, users will also be able to receive podcast recommendations based on genres, their current mood, or shows they already enjoy.
A new “Auto Speed” feature is designed to make listening more efficient by automatically adjusting playback speed during slower speech or informational segments. This aims to create a more streamlined listening experience without sacrificing comprehension. While listeners can already manually adjust playback speeds, the new feature dynamically adapts speed changes throughout conversations.
The new “On the Go” mode gives Premium users access to listener-friendly controls designed for activities such as running, commuting, or multitasking. Users will get quick access to controls for skipping forward or backward and jumping to the next section of an episode. YouTube says the feature is designed to help users get more out of background playback.
Auto Speed and On the Go mode are currently available for Premium users on Android and are expected to arrive on iOS in the coming months.
With these new additions, YouTube aims to further expand its podcast audience beyond its existing base of more than 1 billion monthly active users.
