OpenAI plans major ChatGPT overhaul focused on AI agents and coding tools

OpenAI is reportedly planning a major transformation of ChatGPT, aiming to evolve the chatbot into a "super app" that can help users manage both personal and professional tasks through AI agents, coding tools, and third-party integrations.

According to a report by the Financial Times, the company's long-term vision extends far beyond conversational AI. OpenAI executive Thibault Sottiaux said the goal is to create a personal AI agent capable of assisting users across all aspects of their lives, from workplace productivity to everyday activities.

A key part of that strategy is Codex, OpenAI's coding platform, which has already attracted more than five million weekly active users. The company believes AI agents that can complete tasks on behalf of users—such as booking travel, organizing schedules, or managing workflows—will ultimately prove more valuable than traditional chatbots.

To support this shift, OpenAI is revamping ChatGPT's web and mobile experiences, placing greater emphasis on coding, image generation, and partner applications. The company is also reorganizing its internal teams, consolidating product groups under new leadership while prioritizing enterprise customers over some consumer-focused initiatives.

The strategic pivot comes as competition in the AI sector intensifies. Rivals including Anthropic and Microsoft are rapidly advancing their own AI offerings, increasing pressure on OpenAI to grow revenue and establish a clear path to profitability.

OpenAI is also strengthening its ties with policymakers. The company plans to provide the U.S. government with early access to certain AI models under a voluntary framework introduced by President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, discussions around potential government stakes in AI companies have reportedly involved OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as officials explore ways to share the economic benefits of AI more broadly.
