OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Work, a new AI agent designed to handle more ambitious workplace tasks by bringing together information from connected applications and workflows. Powered by GPT-5.6, the agent can gather context across multiple platforms to create finished outputs such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations and web pages.

Built on Codex technology, ChatGPT Work goes beyond answering questions by completing multi-step tasks across the web, desktop and mobile devices. OpenAI says the new agent is capable of reasoning through complex workflows, using templates and reference files, and producing polished work with minimal user intervention.

The company says users can now hand over entire workflows with a single prompt, allowing ChatGPT Work to continue processing tasks even when they are away from their computer or smartphone.

Alongside GPT-5.6, ChatGPT Work is rolling out first to Pro, Enterprise and Edu users, with Plus and Business subscribers expected to receive access over the coming days. The updated ChatGPT desktop app is now available globally for Windows and macOS, with Chat, Work and Codex accessible across all plans, including the free tier.

The new agent also enables users to start a task on their phone, review drafts while on the go and monitor the progress of long-running workflows. On desktop, ChatGPT Work can access local files and applications to complete tasks. OpenAI has also merged the standalone Codex app into the new ChatGPT desktop app, allowing developers to use the coding agent alongside broader productivity workflows.

Plugins connect ChatGPT to workplace apps

ChatGPT Work integrates with workplace tools including Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars, CRM platforms, project management software and other internal applications. The AI can automatically determine when to retrieve information from connected services based on a user's prompt, or users can manually specify a source by typing "@" followed by the application's name. OpenAI has also introduced a unified plugins directory, making it easier to manage integrations while allowing ChatGPT to recommend relevant plugins during conversations.

Ability to automate repetitive tasks

ChatGPT Work can also schedule and automate recurring tasks. Users can configure the agent to perform actions on a schedule or when specific events occur. For example, it can review Slack updates, check websites and dashboards each morning, monitor new customer feedback, or automatically update presentations when feedback arrives via email.

Enterprise security and safeguards

ChatGPT Work is built on the same enterprise-grade security, privacy and compliance framework as ChatGPT Enterprise. Administrators can centrally manage user access, define which company data ChatGPT can access, control connected tools and plugins, and restrict the actions the AI is permitted to perform. The Compliance API also provides organizations with visibility into ChatGPT Work conversations and actions for auditing and governance.

The platform includes additional safeguards such as granular controls for browser access, connected applications, local files and network permissions. OpenAI has also introduced Auto-review, which uses AI to examine high-risk actions involving connected tools and APIs before they are executed, helping prevent the unauthorized sharing of sensitive information.

ChatGPT Work follows the same usage-based pricing model as Codex, with usage depending on the complexity and compute required for each task. Enterprise and Edu administrators can also configure workspace-level spending limits and usage controls through the Admin Console.
